How to Keep Your Audience Engaged

It’s important to analyze your audience. The key is to overcome our own preferences, and focus on what the audience wants. Here are some things to help keep you on track:

  • Even if you are endlessly fascinated by detail, resist the urge to tell them that one last interesting fact, if you suspect the only person interested is you.
  • Anticipate their questions. If it becomes apparent that they want to know mainly about implementation, plan to spend most of your time discussing this subject.
  • If you are bored with small details but know your audience will want them, prepare the information as a handout so you can refer to it and satisfy their curiosity.

Analyzing your audience doesn’t do you any good unless you’re prepared to make the changes dictated by that analysis. Don’t fight it, and the results will be worth the work.
